Mike Horn and the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Titanio

Mike Horn is what you might call an adventure addict. The modern-day explorer has climbed, crawled, skied and swam through vast and remote corners of the globe too wild for most of us to dream of. Whether hydrospeeding down the length of the Amazon, sailing and walking the first solo circumnavigation of the Equator unaided, or spending two months trudging to the North Pole in total winter darkness, the man seems unstoppable.

POLE2POLE EXPEDITON - MIKE HORN - SOUTH POLE - LUMINOR SUBMERSIBLE 1950 3 DAYS GMT AUTOMATIC TITANIO- 47mm (PAM00719)

In the extreme weather conditions Mike Horn is facing, a digital watch such as those often favoured by today’s explorer would simply freeze. So it’s necessary for Horn to have not only a mechanical watch, but one able to withstand the stresses of his environment. The Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Titanio 47mm has been rigorously tested to withstand extreme environmental pressures such as tropical heat and arctic cold, and, as a watch that must presumably be ready for the deep waters of the oceans Horn must cross, is water resistant to 300M.

PAM00719

This extraordinary special edition, dedicated to the Pole2Pole expedition, is limited to just 500 pieces. Each is personalised both on the dial with a “Pole2Pole” inscription, and on the back of the case, with “Pole2Pole” and Mike Horn’s signature engraved. With a brushed titanium case, the  Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Titanio 47mm carries GMT functions, enabling the local time and the time in another country to be read at the same time. Officine Panerai have created an extremely hard-wearing and durable timepiece, with a treated rubber strap ideal for water-resistance and wearing comfort.

Not only is the watch extensively tested for water resistance, but the case undergoes a thermal shock test, to verify the resistance of parts to sudden temperature variations; a damp heat test, to determine the reliability of the watch under damp and hot conditions; a salt spray test, to check corrosive resistance, and a synthetic sweat test, to verify condition after (simulated) use. Mike Horn’s challenge may be tough, but so is this watch.
